1. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.
The Interactive Space Encyclopedia has two types of install. High Install needs more memory and is a full installation of the whole program. Low Install does not include full-screen animations or the Wordprocessor facility. If your machine has less than 8 megabytes of RAM it will automatically Low Install, however, you may be able to run the whole program if you have enough virtual memory. See below.
2. RAM AND VIRTUAL MEMORY.
The Interactive Space Encyclopedia needs as much RAM as is possible on your system. Because each machine is configured differently it is possible that without maximum RAM you may experience problems with 'Out of Memory' errors. To stop this happening, we recommend that you increase the amount of virtual memory that your Windows uses.
To increase your Windows virtual memory settings :-
i) Go to the Program Manager, and then open up your Main program group.
ii) Run the Control Panel by double clicking on the icon.
iii) Select the 386 Enhanced icon.
iv) Select the "Virtual Memory" button.
v) Select the "Change" button.
vi) Enter a larger setting in the New Size input box. Try entering a number about 4000 bytes more than the current setting. If you type in a number larger than is possible on your machine a warning box will appear, if this happens try a lower setting.
vii) Select "O.K." and then follow the on-screen instructions.
3. VIDEO FOR WINDOWS.
This is needed in order to view the film sequences on the disc. If this is not already installed on your machine then read the following.
i) Exit this Install program by clicking on "O.K." then on "Cancel".
ii) From the Program Manager, select "File" then "Run".
iii) Enter D:\videofw\setup.exe
Where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.
iv) Follow the on-screen instructions.
v) Re-run this installation.
4. SOUND.
We recommend that you adjust your MCI sound buffer to improve the performance of some areas of this disc, such as the tutorial sections. This setting alters the way some sections of the disc work. If the buffer is set too low for your machine, sound may break up in the tutorial sections. If the buffer is set too high for your machine you may experience long delays in running the tutorial sections.
To change the MCI audio buffer setting:-
i) Exit from install program by clicking on "O.K." then on "Cancel".
ii) From the Program Manager, select the Main program group.
iii) Select the Control Panel icon.
iv) Select the Drivers icon.
v) Scroll down the list and double click on the '[MCI] Sound' line.
vi) Adjust the sound buffer according to your machine type, e.g. for a fast machine with lots of memory set the buffer at 9; for a slower machine with not much memory set the buffer above 4.
vi) Click "O.K." to continue installation.
5. PRINTERS.
If your Windows has not been configured for a printer, then you will experience problems, such as error messages when you try to view some of the text in the Encyclopedia.
If this problem occurs, install a dummy printer driver with your windows installation discs and then re-run the Encyclopedia. Refer to your Windows manual for instructions on how to install a Printer Driver.
